But the smart rear extension of the house offers much more than the 1.5-feet-deep . The sunken design of the living area also turns it into a lovely gathering space for friends and family and the open design of the new extension along with the corridor and kitchen ensure that there is a flood of filtered light indoors.
Designed by Toronto-based firm Ian MacDonald Architect the silhouette of the cabin is intentionally kept modest and low-lying to ensure that it blends in with the landscape that surrounds it. In fact those visiting the cabin can only sense its presence as they climb up the dock that leads to the structure.
One of the biggest challenges during the design of this multi-level house was both its unique orientation and the flood of sunlight that entered the house because of the giant glass wall that connects the living area with the pool outside.
Passive cooling techniques along with the presence of a pool ensure that the dependence on artificial cooling is kept to a minimum creating a pleasant ambiance and conserving energy at the same time.
Internal partitions on every level were kept to a bare minimum and used only when absolutely necessary to ensure that the interior feels as spacious as possible. Elegant LED strip lighting dashing pendants and even beautiful uplights complete the remarkable transformation that sees a tall boring townhouse acquire a new cheerful and visually spacious vibe.
